BASIC ADVICE & GUIDELINES
All pets in our care are given breaks and rest periods between procedures. Dogs are allowed access to a secure yard to relieve themselves. and have access to fresh water. Cats and small pets are tranferred from carriers to larger indoor enclosures with water, food and little trays provided.
Grooming times vary from breed to breed and animal to animal, ranging from one to up to four hours or more for more specialised styles. Old dogs, puppies and aggressive pets may require a little more time as we do not rush your pet. Remember we are dealing with sharp implements and moving animals, so please be patient. Your pet's health and safety is our priority.
If you dog gets on with other dogs we will allow freedom with our own dogs under supervision of staff in the grooming room. If your pet is aggressive to other dogs or people, please notify staff upon arrival.
Please note that bitches in season will not be groomed as this causes stress to other dogs and also is uncomfortable for the bitch in question. Please also allow time for your pet to relieve themselves before their grooming appointment. If your pet accidentally fouls the premises or footpath, please notify staff who will be happy to supply you with scoops and cleaning materials.
Matted coats may incur a surcharge. If your pet is severly matted there may be no alternative but to clip your pet down. This is done in the best interests of your pet as dematting and a matted coat can cause pain and discomfort.
We see a lot of deglected coats after winter. Peoples' thinking is that dogs will feel the cold if groomed during the winter, but in fact this can cause more harm than good as a dog inevitably gets matted and then in wet weather is continually damp. This is why we offer winter grooming and allow your pet to have a slightly longer style which is easier to manage than just to allow it to grow.
WINTER GROOMING ADVICE
Now that the summer has gone you would think that dogs and cats don't need as much grooming, however this is not true. As the weather gets damp pets tend to get more muddy and dirty, and the usual fun baths in the garden with the hose cease leaving your pet mucky, damp and uncomfortable. We always advise our customers that grooming is vital to keep your pet healthy during the winter months.
This does not necessarily mean a short trim. We can style your pet longer than the usually summer trim, but the main benefit is to keep them clean and healthy. We see so many dogs and cats that are allowed to grow extremely long over winter and then become matted which results in their being clipped short which then leaves the pet feeling the cold. Matted fur, especially on legs, absords water like a sponge so if out on a wet walk the dog barely has chance to dry before going out again, causing skin problems, and possibly infection between the toes.
We can offer full grooms and economical bath and tidy-ups on a 6-8 weekly schedule which prevents your pet from getting matted, so before it becomes a problem please book an appointmnet. Please remember that once your pet has become matted there is no humane way of saving the coat without causing pain and stress to your pet, which is why we do not demat. Remember: it is hair and grows back.

NEW PUPPIES
Acquiring a new puppy is one of the most exciting moments in a pet owner's life and in all that excitement we can forget important things such as acclimatising them to the grooming experience. Breeders or rescue centres rarely give out advice on when and how to socialise your puppy to grooming, often with owners buying the wrong equipment which can hurt or cause distress. Here at Posh Pets we can advise the right combs, brushes, shampoos and methods to use on your puppy.
We often get new owners wanting a certain style or full groom on a young puppy; Sometimes this can be achieved and sometimes not. We do not force a puppy through the groom. We take our time and over the course of a few weeks we can achieve the perfect look with patience and reward, and a little homework from the owner. We see many puppies that have been pushed through a full groom at a very young age causing them to be fearful and fidgety of the grooming process.
Owners often leave it till their pet is between six and twelve months old, which can cause a lot of stress as everything is alien and a majority are severly matted with no hope of saving the coat which results in a complete shave down which can stress a young dog and damage new coat growth. Please talk to us as soon as your puppy is vaccinated and we can assess his or her needs. The first puppy session is around £10 for dogs up to the age of 14 weeks where we bath, trim nails, check ears and tidy-up feet and eyes. We then work out a schedule of regular acclimatisation sessions at very reasonable prices starting at £15 for small breeds, and £20 for medium to large breeds, building up to a full groom by the time the puppy is between 5 and 8 months. We find this method fantastic as dogs get used to the grooming process and enjoy coming in.
CREATIVE GROOMING
Here at Posh Pets we offer traditional grooming to breed standards as well as individual, funky and traffic-stopping styles.
Services include a range of different poodle styles, for example Scandinavian, Teddy and Bedlington for that little something different. We offer a colouring service where we use vegetable-based safe dyes designed for dogs (only suitabel for some breeds), temporary spray-in colours, bows, glitter sprays, and believe it or not, we get many requests for mohawks, and we will soon be adding doggy nail pawlish in glitzy colours for that designer pooch. Prices on request depending on style and colours used.

RABBIT & SMALL ANIMAL GROOMING
We offer a nail clipping and grooming service for short and long-haired rabbits and guinea pigs, however we do not bath small pets as this is extremely stressful to them. Some of the services include nail/ear/eye care, trims and tidy-ups for excessively long coats, parasite control and hygiene clips on certain rabbit breeds as their bottoms can get mucky. One thing we cannot do is to clip down severly matted rabbits as this is highly stressful and can lead to injury to your pets,. This is a job for a qualified vet under sedation.
